Mahi Dream, a 1991 56-foot Lydia sport-fisherman, has been well maintained by her previous owners with more than $1 million in upgrades and refits over the years, all backed by a file of its history. This tournament-ready bluewater battlewagon has been put on the market for $449,000.

Mahi Dream’s engines were swapped in 2003 from the original Detroit Diesels to twin MTU diesel engines with a combined horsepower of 2,300 hp. Paired to ZF Marine BW155/ZF550 gear boxes, three-inch shafts and four-blade propellers, Mahi Dream can quickly accelerate to 30 knots. The vessel’s cruise speed is 25 knots.

Mahi Dream’s dance-floor-size cockpit has a nonskid painted fiberglass sole with the transom wrapped with a teak-colored vinyl. When it comes to angling amenities, there are five gunwale-mounted rod holders, six rod holders on the tower legs, outlets for electric reels, Rudd triple-spreader outriggers and a removable Murray Brothers fighting chair, which is stowed inside a table in the salon. Relax in the shade under a folding “San Juan” style sunshade in one of four teak chairs, or on the aft-facing and cushioned bench seat to port. Stow gear in four transom lockers, or in the port and starboard gaff/tackle lockers. Frozen bait can go in a portable teak step box that doubles as a drink cooler.

The flybridge, accessed via an eight-step ladder from the cockpit, has a painted nonskid fiberglass sole covered by a fiberglass hardtop. Two Murray Brothers helm chairs on raised pedestals sit behind a center Palm Beach-style helm with varnished teak. There is a two-spoke aluminum helm wheel with power-assist and Glendinning single-lever controls with emergency back-up system. Full VDO engine gauges are mounted under a glass panel with radio equipment mounted in an overhead box with a teak cover. Six teak drawers to port and four teak drawers and tray to starboard provide stowage. Other electronics and navigation equipment include:

  • Furuno radar on Furuno NavNet 10″ screen
  • Garmin 7212 12″ touchscreen plotter
  • Simrad AP22 autopilot
  • Ritchie 2″ magnetic compass on bulkhead
  • Northstar 6001 GPS/plotter
  • ICOM M602 VHF
  • ICOM M402 VHF – hidden under helm
  • Glendinning engine controls
  • Trim tab controls
  • Alarm panel for port and starboard engines and high water level

  • Emergency engine stop switches

Guests can relax on the flybridge’s L-shaped settee with a folding teak table forward the helm while enjoying a beverage from the bar unit with a built-in refrigerator and sink. Zip up the three-sided clear-vinyl enclosure and turn on the air conditioning to keep cool on the ride out.

Need a better view? Climb the tuna tower to spot frigate birds and keep an eye on the trolling spread.

Mahi Dream’s salon is carpeted over a teak-and-holly sole with a teak grate landing at the door. The light-colored upholstery with varnished teak cabinetry glows from the overhead lighting. Guests can relax on a two-person loveseat to starboard with stowage below or at the portside L-shaped sofa, both covered with an ostrich-embossed leather. Under the sofa is a small top-loading freezer or refrigerator, depending on how you set the thermostat. There is a split-galley arrangement forward, but it’s open to the salon. Under the Jaguar granite countertops to port, there are two Sanyo refrigerators and a Kenmore “clear ice” ice maker hidden behind grain-matched teak doors. Some of the galley amenities include:

  • Magic Chef four-burner glasstop cooktop
  • Sharp Carousel microwave/convection oven behind a tambour sliding door
  • Deep undermount stainless-steel sink

After a long day of fishing, owners and guests can retire belowdecks to one of three staterooms. The master stateroom is to starboard with the VIP forward, and there is an over/under twin-sized berth port as well as a shared head. The master stateroom has a queen-sized berth with a private ensuite head. Owners will find plenty of stowage space in two large drawers below the berth, in hanging lockers, and a shelf above the berth as well as in the nightstand with a drawer and cabinets. The entire aft bulkhead is mirrored. Above is a teak soffit with three light fixtures. The VIP stateroom has a double-sized berth with four drawers below, hanging lockers, a vanity with slide-out tray, and mirrored door with cedar lined shelves. The sole is varnished teak-and-holly. Overhead are four LED lights, two stereo speakers and a deck hatch for ventilation and escape. The guest stateroom has twin-sized over/under berths with two drawers under the lower berth. A three-drawer chest fills the space that is plumbed for a washer and dryer combo which could be added.

“Paul Spencer qualifies as about the most progressive custom boatbuilder in America. He pushes the limits even amidst naysayers. And so it has been with his several boats powered by Volvo Penta’s Inboard Propulsion System (IPS). Skeptics abound, but so far everyone who actually drives one develops the passion of a convert. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Spencer’s boats are all fast, beautiful and successful fishing machines no matter how they’re powered — which is why Volvo commissioned Paul Spencer to build its new corporate flagship to showcase the abilities and efficiencies of IPS power,” Yachting previously reported

Spencer Yachts built eight boats with IPS power packages and Gilman Yachts currently has one of them, a 49-foot Express Sportfish named Pisces, listed for sale with a $1.65 million asking price.

Cockpit features include a full-size Pompanette teak fighting chair with a six-rod rocket launcher and two 60-inch in-sole fish boxes. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

For anglers in the market for a tournament-ready sport-fisherman, Pisces has a reported 34-knot top hop and a 30-knot cruise thanks to twin 700 hp Volvo Penta IPS2 D11 diesels. The dance-floor-size, teak cockpit is equipped with a full-size Pompanette teak fighting chair with a six-rod rocket launcher, rod and tackle stowage, a grill station, two 60-inch in-deck fish boxes and a Pipewelders tuna tower with double-spreader outriggers. It’s worth noting there’s also plumbing in place to support two on-deck livewells, however, none are included in the sale. A mezzanine allows the crew to keep an eye on trolled baits.

The bridge deck has a new C-Worthy enclosure and upholstery on the forward seating, which includes inboard-facing bench seats flanking the forward-facing bench seat on the front of the helm station. Three ladder-back helm chairs sit at the centerline teak helm pod.

There’s an L-shaped Corian countertop, high-gloss teak finishes as well as booth seating forward. A 50-inch, flat-screen TV is mounted to starboard adjacent to the galley and dining area.

The two-stateroom, two-head layout includes a forepeak master stateroom, which has a centerline queen berth with built-in teak nightstands and an en suite head. On this 49 Express Sportfish, the guest stateroom is amidships, abaft the galley and down a few steps. It has twin berths.
